Roman's Birthday Time Capsule

We are finally at part 3 of Roman’s second birthday party.  Today I want to share with you our little disclaimer from our invitation.

Roman's Birthday Time Capsule

You read that right.  We asked for no gifts. (I am also proud to tell you that I wrote that.  *pats self on back*)

To be completely honest, I have to tell you two things.  One, the original letter idea is not mine, I took it from my neighbors who did the same for their 2 and 3 year old.  Two, I was a little self conscious when I sent these out.  I’m not one to go against the grain or tell people what we do or don’t want for our child.  I mean, if I could, I would put *no toys that make any noise, ever* on every invitation and card and I know I’m not alone in wanting to do that!  But, I’m a stickler for tradition and pleasantries and this was (pardon my pun) pushing the envelope for me.  However, I just loved this idea and figured that Ro is still young enough that he doesn’t fully comprehend what it means to have a birthday.

Another reason I loved this idea, less stuff.  I’ll say it, my kids are spoiled.  Not by my husband and me, though.  They want for nothing and get just about everything they ask for, especially when the grandmas and my aunt are around.  Ro loves to play with Gav’s toys and look at his books, he has a ton of Gav’s hand me downs that are in great condition (some how), so there wasn’t anything he truly needed.  This was pretty much my only opportunity to do this.

Once all of the letters are in, still waiting on a few, we’ll seal it up and keep it somewhere safe.  I wrote mine this past Saturday night and had to hold back the crocodile mama tears.   Just thinking about him reading my words in the future, probably standing much taller than me, just grabbed at my heart.  I am so so glad we did this for him.  We’re also adding a few extra items that are special like his invitation and cake topper.

And, last but not least, I have mention that grandparents and other family can’t help themselves.  Ro did receive a few gifts.  They were perfect and he loves them! I love how much they love these boys!

Space themed party photo booth

Welcome to part two of Ro’s second birthday party, the photo booth!  I love photo booths.  Call them cliche, call them basic, I don’t care because they are so much fun.  Whether they’re full of props or just a place to document who was there, I think a photo booth is a always great idea.

The hardest part of all of this was definitely getting the little ones to cooperate.  But you do the best you can with what you’ve got which is why the picture of both my boys is Gav with a helmet on from bike riding and Ro trying desperately to get the sunglasses to go on his face.  For my props, I found a few things round the house (i.e. the gold frame and left over party favor glasses).

To make the back drop, I took two black tri-fold presentation boards, wrote on the top, and splattered both with white paint. I stuck them to our car port wall with some command picture hanging strips and they held up for the entire party.

Roman's 2nd Trip Around The Sun

It’s almost surreal to think that just a little over 2 years ago I was sharing my pregnancy journey with little Ro.  Now he’s a big boy two year old.  And I do mean big!  We just had his check up and we’re up there in the percentiles.

We had so much fun celebrating him this past Saturday with a sun, moon, and stars themed party.  I especially loved planning this one because black and gold are two of my favorite colors and this party had a ton of both!  Be sure to scroll to the bottom for details on where you can find some of the decorations.  ENJOY!

THE FOOD

Roman's 2nd Trip Around The Sun

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a sucker for a good themed party.  This one was no different and I had fun coming up with names for the food.  We kept it very simple, mainly foods that toddlers would enjoy with one or two added for the grown ups.

A quick side note on the pasta salad: I had originally wanted THESE NOODLES but the store I’ve bought them at before no longer carries them.  Needless to say, I was devastated (first world problems, I know) but improvised with some shells as moon craters.

Hubby recently got a new grill as a present so he was more than happy to take care of the hot dogs.  Definitely way better than boiling or nuking them!

THE CAKE

THE ACTIVITIES We had special sprinkles and icing for the kiddos to decorate cookies.  Turns out this only works for onlder kids, but they had fun! Spaceship decorate it was a big hit!  I took a large shipping box and cut here and there to create the body of the rocket.  Washable makers and paint for decorating and let the kiddos go crazy!  My boys love playing in it even after the party. In keeping with the times, I call this one my eclipse cake.  It’s alternating layers of chocolate and yellow cake (from a box cuz this mama didn’t quite feel up to making it from scratch) and regular white icing.  To get the pearlescent/metallic look, I used shimmer spray (can be bought at Walmart in the baking section).  Crumbled rock candy and Milky Way bars made for great, not to mention delicious, garnish.

I did some traditional bags with sunglasses, glow bracelets, and on-theme treats (moon pies, star crunches, and Milky Ways).  Then I found these fun moon rocks on Pinterest.  All you have to do is wrap trinkets and candy into layers of aluminum foil.

Roman's 2nd Trip Around The SunThe kids loved unwrapping them and finding little surprises as they went.  Since we had a much younger crowd, I kept them in a container but I had originally thought it would be fun to do a moon rock hunt!  With older party guests, that would definitely be a highlight.
