First Birthday

Roman’s Lumberjack Bash

In DIY, Mommyhood

Finally the day came for the big party!  I made as much as a could for this one and had been planning it since about July.  Ok…ok…to be honest, I knew his theme from about the time he was born.  I’m weird like that.  Anyway, I wanted to have as much for the party that I could and by starting so early, it was definitely more affordable.

Luckily, a lumberjack theme is a great one for this time of year because many stores are already setting up for the holiday season.  There was plenty of fall and Christmas decor to inspire me!

Perusing Pinterest can be quite daunting sometimes so I pared the menu down to what I knew most people would like and what would be easy to prepare.  Also, with a brunch menu, had to have mimosas and coffee!  After a morning of putting all the food together my house smelled like bacon for a few hours and it was awesome (PS: Baking bacon is the best!)  I definitely bought too many pancakes but at least my boys love them and now they have breakfast until they’re 25.

On to the cake/cakes.  Usually, my mom and aunt are in charge of the cake (See Gav’s construction cake HERE.  They NAILED it! Ha!).  This year they found an ice cream cake that looked like a log and decided that they would order two.

Come the day of the party however, Baskin Robbin’s didn’t have our order.  Yep, no log cakes.  But they did give us a delicious cookies cream cake that was even bigger so, ya know, it’s all good.  But I definitely wanted a smash cake for Ro.  I had been swooning over all of the “naked cakes” on Pinterest and thought they would be perfect.  Through the hustle and bustle of the party prep, I suddenly became in charge of making the cake.  Now, I’ve made cake before but not to be presentable or pretty or anything like that.  I’ve made cupcakes but my icing job is always pretty disappointing but I was determined to give this a shot.

I’m happy to report that it turned out great.  I was (still kind of am) very proud of myself!  The “ONE” topper will have a DIY coming soon to the Pretty Providence blog so stay tuned.  The bear candle is just a figurine that I dug a screwdriver into and hot glued a candle in.  Be careful with hot gluing a candle though, obvious they melt!  (Side Note: The awesome hubby cut the wood slices from an old tree we cut down in our front yard!)

The thank you bags were a fun little addition and something for the guests to take home or eat on the way home.  I also knew that I would have a few smaller guests and wanted to give them a little something extra.  Their bags were filled with some bubbles, red foil wrapped kisses, a glow bracelet, some woodland creature tattoos, and gummy BEARS, of course!

Then it came time for celebrating and smash caking.  Ro quickly got the hang of it and I even snuck a  icing filled kiss in there!

We had such a wonderful time and want thank everyone for coming out to celebrate our burly little lumberjack!

XO, Kelly
PS: Huge thank you to my friend Talie for taking photos for us!!

Monster Bash Cake Topper

In Uncategorized
So I know you’re probably ready for the monster takeover of the blog to be over…
Well this is the last monster post because I just had to share!
I made LM’s birthday cake topper and here’s how!
Use kabob skewers, like the ones from the photo booth props, and glue your monsters and twine.  The skewers work well for the topper because the pointed ends slide easily into the cake.
Side note: MAD PROPS to my sis-in-law for her sick cake baking/decorating skills!

Monster Bash Photo Booth (Part 2: The Backdrop and Pics)

In Uncategorized
I am so happy I did this photo booth!  It was a lot of fun and we came out with some GREAT shots!
For the backdrop, I hung a piece of muslin on hooks and made a ribbon banner and an eyeball banner.
 To make the ribbon banner:
Cut a piece of jute string the length of your photo booth area.
Tie SEVERAL pieces of ribbon along the jute string.
To make the eyeball banner:
Cut a piece of twine the length of your photo booth area.
Glue eyeball cutouts along the length of twine.
You can use a stationary camera on a tripod or leave the camera out for anyone to act as the photographer.  We did the latter.
Here’s what ensued:

And winner for best photo goes to……

Happy Birthday LM!!!!!

In Uncategorized
I truly don’t believe that it was already been one year since we first met the sweetest little boy on earth!
This time last year I was 6 hours into my 20 hour labor and wondering if he would ever come out!
It was all worth it.  Every push and pain, every tear, was worth the amazing miracle that God has blessed us with.
We love you so much, Gavin!

Monster Bash Photo Booth (Part 1: The Props)

In Uncategorized
LM’s party is just a few days away and I’m finishing up all of the details.  Since this is a 1 year old’s party, we won’t do much of the usual birthday party things.  The kids will play, the adults will mingle, and we’ll watch a 1 year old open presents and eat cake.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to enjoy the bejeezus out of it and I’ll probably cry.  But I thought I’d make it a little bit extra fun for the adults and have a photo booth!
Of course with a photo booth, comes PHOTO PROPS!  So here are my DIY props!
It’s as easy at print, cut, and glue.
We have the classics…
No photo booth is complete without a mustache!
the special monster themed props…
and last but not least a very special prop in honor of the birthday boy!
AND because y’all are so special to me, here are the monster props for you!

Gearing Up For A First Birthday

In Uncategorized
The time has come….kind of hard to believe.
Our little man is going to be one very soon!
Well, I guess I should say our little MONSTER.  That’s the theme for his birthday!
Not really sure that it’s necessary to have a theme at 1 year old, but it’s important to me.  It’s so funny that we plan and plan and plan for these birthdays that they have no idea about.  They won’t even remember, but we will.  We will have pictures to look back on and show him when he’s older.
Honestly, it’s just what I do.
Birthdays are a big deal to me!  I still get excited for mine, even if I am ever-so-quickly approaching 30.  Even if it really doesn’t matter anymore, it’s only 3 days before LM’s. I’m still excited! (It could also be because I know that one of my presents is my new Keurig!!!!!!  15 more days!)
And now that I have birthday parities to plan for our little guy, I think, if it’s possible, I’m even more excited.  So definitely be on the look out for some birthday DIYs!
